Following a brief battle with cancer, it is with profound sadness and disbelief that we announce the passing of Wayne Richard Zahayko (Wayner) at the age of 41. Surrounded by his loving family and friends, Wayne passed away peacefully on January 29, 2015 at the Thompson General Hospital.
Wayne was born on October 15, 1973 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. At the age of 5 his family relocated to Thompson with little brother Jason in tow. Wayne attended Westwood Elementary School and graduated from R.D. Parker Collegiate. He obtained his Mechanical Engineering Technologist certificate from SAIT in 2001 and received his Red Seal Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) in 2011.
He met his mate, Deveny Roy in August 1998. They married in October 2006 and between them have four children and two grandchildren. Wayne formed many close friendships throughout school, work and hockey. His involvement and love of hockey throughout the years included playing as a child to coaching his own boys and many of his friends’ children as an adult. Wayne spent the majority of his life in Thompson and worked at Vale as an Industrial Mechanic. He was happiest when camping, fishing, hunting, and getting together with family and friends. The memories shared and the stories told, speak to his fun-loving nature. Wayne had a big heart, strong family values and was a true Canadian at heart.
Wayne is survived by his beloved wife, Deveny Zahayko of Thompson, sons Taylor, Carter and Hunter of Thompson, daughter Ashley (grandchildren Cali and Brady) of Thompson; parents Deloris and Paul Zahayko of Thompson, brothers Jason (wife Lynelle, children Sadie and Seth) and Kirby, sister Candace of Thompson; mother-in-law Bev Wadham of Flin Flon, father-in-law Gilles Roy of Flin Flon; brother-in-law Dan (wife Chris, children Xander and Logan) of Flin Flon; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and large extended family; and countless friends.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 4th, 2015 at St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, 114 Cree Road in Thompson at 1:00. Cremation to follow.
