Obituary

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our loving mom, cherished granny, dear aunty, special sister in law, and sister, great friend on April 24th, 2020 at age 70 years old at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg MB.

Amelia grew up in Split Lake with her parents and later went out to school in Norway House , Birtle and Dauphin at a young age. She was a survivor of the residential Schools. She started working for the Hudson Bay Company and she was employed with them for many years. She was asked by Chief and Council of Split Lake to manage the Social Development program and become the Welfare Administrator. She held that position until she met the love of her life, Donald, and moved to York Landing where they raised their daughters, Wendy and Tanya.

Amelia continued to work in York Landing in many capacities—social development, store manager, health, program, Keeyask project, justice program . She was also instrumental in obtaining a church for her community to preserve the Christian Faith for her people. Amelia overcame many obstacles in life, which made her a strong woman—breast cancer, loss of husband and her siblings.

Amelia loved to humour people with her jokes, enjoyed visiting sick people that she knew in hospitals, loved visiting her friends—Stella, Janet, Modeena, Elizabeth, and Nellie . She thoroughly enjoyed the company of her grandchildren whom she adored and loved with all her heart, and her girls that she loved dearly. She also loved to participate in community activities and enjoyed her work as a lay reader for the church in her latter years.. She was a respected Elder and a pillar of the community where she was appointed to many committees. She would express her views openly.
Amelia had many life long friends whom she enjoyed spending time with. She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her…...

Amelia leaves to mourn her beautiful girls: Wendy, Tanya (Joseph) Grandchildren: Laura, Michelle, Conner, Myla Sister in law: Nora Jean , Freda, Molly, Alice, Isabelle, Leona, Josephine, Brother in laws: Francis, Howard, Tommy Robert, Rodney Sister/Cuz: Emily Brightnose and all her nieces and nephews and her numerous friends and numerous cousins.

I was saddened to hear of Amelia's passing, although thankfully she knew and loved the Lord. She is finally home, pain-free. I met Amelia when I worked for KTC as a health educator and flew into York Landing a few times. She was a lovely woman to work with. She held the health portfolio at the time, I believe. I met Rebecca Beardy through Amelia and they let me stay in their home while I was in York Landing for work. My time there was memorable. I wish I had known Amelia was in hospital I would have tried to visit.
