Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Romanica on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at the Northern Spirit Manor in Thompson at the age of 74.

Born in Ignace, Ontario, Barb was raised in Northern Ontario, moving to Winnipeg before settling in Thompson, MB and working at Vale (INCO in her time). Barb was never afraid to step up to volunteer or commit to a cause, especially one that advanced the standing, rights and recognition of women. Barb was very proud to be one of the first women in Canada to become a 1st Class Power Engineer, and she joined the Union in order to encourage a stronger voice for women in a mostly-male workforce. After retirement, Barb continued giving with her volunteer work with the Relay for Life, Cancer Care Manitoba and Canada Red Cross. Barb was a very proud member of Lac de Mille Lac First Nation, and was recognized and celebrated as an Elder within her community in the last few years. She was a very active member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church, singing in the choir, volunteering and belonging to the CWL.

Left to cherish her memory are sons Karl, Tery (Deanna), and Grandchildren Ella and Carter, all of Thompson and her sisters Anne (Jan) and Lois.

Barb was predeceased by her Grandparents, Parents - Frank and Anne Romanica, and brother - Lawrence.

A private family service will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at Boardman Funeral Home in Thompson officiated by Father Guna. Following the service between 1:30-3:00pm, friends are welcome to visit and say their goodbyes. People are welcome in small groups to maintain social distancing numbers for public gatherings. Internment will take place in Kenora, Ontario.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations can be made in Barb’s honour to the Canadian Cancer Society (www.cancer.ca) or Canadian Red Cross (www.redcross.ca).

My deepest and heartfelt condolences. Barb was always pivotal in the life of my family. I have so many fond memories of her over the years. She was always there and was the closest thing I had to an auntie growing up in Thompson. On my return visits to Thompson, she was always on the "must see" list. I considered her a positive role model and mentor. Her passing will leave an empty spot in many hearts. I know her amazing spirit will live on through her family. Take care everyone. Hugs and love to each of you. Mary-Lou

Dearest Karl, Teri, Deanna & Family. Today I am sending u my Deepest Condolence for the Loss of your Momma, my Best Friend. I met your Mom 52 years ago in Thompson MB. We became the Best of Friends & have been inseparable since. We supported each other through thick & thin. I remember when she delivered u Boys. Your Dad called & said, "Barb had Boys!" I responded, "U mean a Boy" Then he said, "No, Boys, "Twins" I was so shocked & your Dad sounded over the Moon. She was soooo proud of you & her Grandchildren. Your Mom was a strong & brilliant Woman. She always thought methodically before expressing her thoughts. I remember her working on her Engineering Degree. She would finish each level stating this would be her last one. Then she would start another & another until she completed the Degree period. Top it all off she did it all on her own. What an achievement. So proud of her. Barb never forgot where she came from. Explains why she wants to go back Home. I miss her. We had already lost her due to this horrible disease. Now she is free. God took another one of his Angels Home. Until we meet again, my Dearest Friend. I Love You soooo much.

We are thinking of all of you at this time. We have stayed at/with Barb many times when we have been in Thompson. Bill did many small projects ( putting together garden bench, fireplace, etc) for Barb while we were there. Seeing her in church and singing in the choir always made our attending church extra special. She held/holds a special place in our hearts.
